Gun Collector Values Protection of Corrosion Preventive Storage Bag

Harry Cardenas' Sturm Ruger Revolver and VCI green poly bag

(ALSIP, IL) -- Henry Cardenas, a 19-year gun collector and NRA member, appreciates the protective value of his latest acquisition, a Sturm Ruger revolver. Experience also tells him that storing the gun in its original packaging, a simple green poly bag, will protect the gun itself against corrosion for as long as he owns it.

"I find that the bag protects the gun's metal, keeping it in top condition," explained Cardenas, an avid marksman.

The new addition to his collection is a Sturm Ruger GP 100 .357 Magnum double action revolver. It came wrapped in a green poly bag inside the gun case.

"The poly bags don't break down from the oil on the gun," said Cardenas, "but they protect the inside of the plastic case from the gun oil. The bag also seals the gun from dust. That’s really important for automatics, especially, because a little bit of dust can cause them to jam."

Cardenas, originally from northern Illinois, said he has always been fascinated with weapons and their role in history. On a recent trip to historic Galena, IL, for example, he and his family visited the home of General Ulysses S. Grant. In paintings of Civil War generals displayed there, he noticed that brass knuckles and daggers were built into the hand guards of their sabers. "That's intriguing to me," he said.

The first gun he ever bought was a Taurus snub-nosed .38 Special. He now owns more than 20 guns, including several shotguns that provide skeet shooting fun for his family. He's currently in the market for a 410 shotgun for skeet shooting.

He also knows to look for models packaged in the protective green bags. "I don't throw those bags away," he said. "I'm very particular about keeping my guns clean at all times. I figure that if that's how the manufacturer sells it, that's how I should keep it."

Actually, the green poly bags offer a level of hi-tech protection themselves. The gun bags, made by packaging industry leader Daubert Cromwell, contain a proprietary blend of volatile corrosion inhibitors (VCI) that are blended throughout the film itself, not applied as a coating. The VCI slowly vaporizes into the bag enclosure, placing an invisible molecular barrier against the corrosive effects of moisture, salt, and other contaminants on the metal. The rust-preventive vapors penetrate into the small creases and chambers of the gun, eliminating corrosion for as long as the unit is properly packaged.

The VCI protection is safe, non-toxic, and leaves no residue on the surface of the metal that requires cleaning before firing.

Firearms manufacturers worldwide have been using Daubert Cromwell poly bags, papers and oils for decades. They take their lead from the U.S. Department of Defense, which lists Daubert Cromwell on its prestigious Qualified Product List for corrosion inhibitor packaging of military firearms, ammunition and precision metal parts. When military packaging is required, Daubert Cromwell is the government standard.
